5 Reasons Your Air Conditioner Is Louder Than Normal

Here are a few common reasons why your HVAC system might be loud.

1. Loose Screws

Loose screws may be to blame if your HVAC is loud or making a rattling noise. There are screws located in the panels throughout the system as well as screws that hold the system in place. An air conditioner vibrates when it is functioning properly and often times this can cause screws to unfasten. Luckily, this is an easy fix that you can do yourself with just a screwdriver and a few minutes of your time.

2. Motor Problems

Your HVAC is made up of multiple motors, so if it’s operating louder than normal, chances are one of the motors may be the culprit. If your HVAC system is making a grinding noise, it could be a sign of an issue with a fan motor. Often times, bearings will wear down or require lubrication to rid the unit of loud noise. Other times, the noise can be caused by an issue with the compressor motor which may need professional assistance.

3. Debris

Leaves, branches, and other debris can get into your air conditioning unit and cause a loud rattling noise. This is an easy fix though and can be solved by turning off the unit and clearing the debris.

4. Bent Blades

If your HVAC is louder than normal, check to see if one or more of the blades are bent. If a blade is even slightly bent, it can rub against the inside of the unit and make a loud noise. If a blade is bent, simply bend the blade back into place, but be gentle when handling them.

5. Refrigerant Leak

A loud hissing noise coming from your HVAC could indicate an issue with the ductwork, but it may also indicate that there is a refrigerant leak. If there is a refrigerant leak, you should contact your local professionals at Climate Design.
