What Causes Sewer Line Breakdowns Here in Clearwater, St. Pete, and Tampa Areas?

Here in Florida, we see a lot of sewer line damage. There are reasons for that. Mother Nature plays a big part given that we have sandy soil.

Root Intrusion:

Since we’re in a very low-lying area with sea levels, that sandy soil makes it easy for root penetration. This type of soil makes it easy for tree roots to grow shallow and extend horizontal in the top 12 to 24 inches of soil—right where your sewer line is laying (18-30” deep). The sandy conditions make it easy for roots to germinate and penetrate any small cracks or joints. Once that growth starts inside the sewer line, it’s going to cause a blockage.

Aging and Corroding Sewer Pipes:

In addition to root intrusion, we also see a lot of aging and corrosion of sewer pipes. Florida has always been a haven for tourists and retirement homes. So, villas have been here for decades. Over time, sewer lines created from older materials like cast iron or clay deteriorate. Corrosion from hydrogen sulfide gas and water exposure weakens pipe walls and makes them brittle over time. This exposure makes pipes collapse–especially with age.

Heavy External Pressure:

Finally, depending on where your sewer line runs, it could be the subject of heavy loads or external pressure from soil weight, construction, or vehicles. These loads can cause pipes to crack under pressure.

If you have purchased a home and are not sure where the line is, call us, we’ll be able to help you find it.

Clay sewer lines often get roots growing inside. Climate Design can replace or repair your sewer line.

What Factors Affect the Cost of Sewer Line Repairs?

  • 1. Repair or Replace

It depends on repairing or replacing, but repairing a sewer line is almost always less expensive than replacing one with new materials. However, it does depend on the severity of the repair.

  • 2. Method of Repair

The method of the repair or installation is also a factor. Plumbing contractors rely on either trench or trenchless methods to reach the sewer line. Trench digging is the traditional method and costs less on average. Trenchless allows plumbers to make repairs beneath the ground. However, the equipment required to do trenchless does increase the cost of the project.

  • 3. How Much Piping is Needed

How much piping is needed is another factor. Larger jobs will increase labor hours and the amount of piping that needs purchasing to complete the job.
