When You Should Call in a Professional for Water Heater Repairs

We often take hot water for granted, so it’s easy to overlook the signs of potentially serious water heater problems. If you’re experiencing any of the following issues, it’s time to call a Clearwater, FL, plumber for prompt and professional water heater repairs.

Loss of Hot Water

Does the temperature of your water seem to fluctuate at random? Has a dwindling hot water supply suddenly turned your morning shower into a race against time? Whatever the issue, unreliable hot water availability can be extremely frustrating. In areas with particularly hard water — like most of Florida— the likeliest culprit is sediment buildup inside the system. However, poor heating performance can also stem from damaged dip tubes, blocked vent pipes, and a variety of other issues. As such, diagnosing and fixing the problem is best left to the experts.

Loud or Unusual Noises

All water heaters do make a little noise, especially if they’re over a few years old. However, if your system has begun producing loud, persistent, or strange sounds, it’s likely a red flag you shouldn’t ignore. The most common noises include banging, popping, and rumbling caused by mineral deposits inside the tank or on the heating element. Meanwhile, high-pitched whistling and screeching sounds typically indicate a faulty valve somewhere in the system. While an unusually loud water heater isn’t necessarily an emergency, it should still be addressed without delay to prevent further damage.

Leakage or Corrosion

Undetected water leaks can cause significant property damage, not to mention the risk of organic growth. Consequently, it’s important to occasionally check your water heater and call a professional if you spot signs of moisture or corrosion. In some cases, fixing a leak is as simple as tightening a connection or replacing a drain valve. If the tank is badly damaged or corroded, however, installing a replacement water heater may be the most economical solution. Corrosion can also damage the anode rod inside your water heater tank, resulting in discolored or foul-smelling water.
