Why Is My Air Conditioner Running But Not Cooling?

If your air conditioner is running but only blowing warm air, it usually means that the fan is spinning, but the compressor isn’t firing. This could be caused by a simple problem such as a bad thermostat battery, refrigerant leak, or burned-out compressor. Here are a few reasons your AC could fail to keep your Clearwater, FL, home cool.

Checking for AC Problems at the Thermostat

For everyday use, keep your thermostat around 78 degrees with the fan set to “auto.” If your air conditioner runs continuously even when it’s not cooling your home, the fan might be set to the “on” position, or your system may have a faulty limit switch. If your thermostat has batteries, it might be time to replace them as low power can cause unexpected operation. It’s also possible that another type of obstruction is preventing the contactor switch from engaging.

Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Is Blowing Hot Air

Low refrigerant or faulty parts, such as a defective expansion valve, can cause AC malfunctions. Dirty coils, restricted airflow, and refrigerant leaks contribute to ice buildup and decreased efficiency, so these are some of the first signs to look for if your air conditioner is blowing warm air. It’s also possible that an error code is preventing your AC system from running to avoid potential equipment damage. Here are a few other things to consider.

  • If your home has hot and cold spots, the problem could be caused by loose or damaged air ducts or air balancing issues.
  • Clogged filters restrict the airflow and reduce the amount of cool air that’s distributed throughout your home.
  • When your air conditioner first kicks on, you may notice a blast of warm air as the ducts clear.
