The size of the system:

Heat pump size is measured by tonnage. And the cost of a heat pump increases as tonnage increases. Tonnage is important because it adds cooling and heating power to a heat pump. So if you have a larger home, you'll likely need a bigger heat pump with more tonnage to properly heat/cool the entire residence.

The efficiency of the system:

Every heat pump sold in the U.S. has its efficiency measured according to a SEER rating (for cooling efficiency) and HSPF rating (for heating efficiency). Higher SEER and HSPF ratings increase the cost of the system. But it also means you'll pay less in energy bills every month.

The state of a home's ductwork:

Heat pumps push warm and cold air through a system of ducts. If those ducts are in disrepair, that air can escape the ductwork before it reaches all the rooms in your home.
