4 Reasons Your Heat Pump Trips the Breaker

Your heat pump in Bradenton, FL, is great at keeping your home warm in winter and cool in summer. Sometimes, though, it might experience an error and cause the circuit breaker to trip. Here are five reasons a heat pump might trip the breaker.

Air Filter Is Dirty

When the air filter in your heat pump has excessive dust and debris, the system has to work harder to circulate air. This extra effort increases energy usage and can overload the circuit, which trips the breaker. The easiest way to avoid this problem is to replace your air filter regularly. We recommend every 30-90 days.

Short Circuit or Electrical Problem

Electrical problems like wires with damage, loose connections and faulty components can cause a short circuit in the heat pump. This can trip the breaker and is also a fire hazard. If you suspect an electrical problem, stop using the system until you get help from an HVAC service technician.

Circuit Overload

Your heat pump might share a circuit with other appliances. For example, your heat pump and refrigerator could share a circuit. If these devices are running at the same time, the circuit may overload and trip the breaker.

Frozen Coils

When it’s cold outside, the outdoor unit of your heat pump can accumulate ice on the coils. The ice accumulation can put a strain on the heating system and cause it to work harder to maintain the temperature.

This extra strain on the system and the heat pump can trip the breaker. Regular maintenance, such as clearing debris around the outdoor unit and ensuring proper airflow, can help prevent freezing issues.

Your heat pump shouldn’t constantly trip the circuit breaker. If this happens, it’s a sign that something is wrong. Contact Climate Design Home Services today to schedule a heat pump repair.
