Plumbing Goals for 2016

Plumbing Goals for 2016

As you begin the new year, you’re likely setting some new goals. Why not make your own plumbing goals for 2016 as well to help ensure your Florida home stays in top shape and you mitigate disasters before they happen. Follow our quick guide of plumbing goal tips, and ring in the new year knowing you’re already ahead of the game! Read on:

Tip #1: Clean and Sanitize Your Drains

It’s always a good goal to clean and sanitize your drains. This keeps odors away from your sink and drain — and it helps to ensure your drains remain clog-free. If you have a garbage disposal, do not let silverware fall down it. Also, make sure you throw away fruits and vegetables that have a tendency to expand in the drain or clog it — coffee grinds, potatoes and bananas are three predictable culprits.

Tip #2: Install Lead-Free Fittings

In humid Florida climates, it’s easy to for pipes to corrode. That’s why you’ll need to keep an eye on them every year and inspect them for rust and other corrosion. Replace rusty pipes and faucets and replace them with lead-free fittings, which will not rust in the future.

Tip #3: Flush Properly

Make sure you know what you actually can flush down your toilet. This seems pretty simple, but you would be surprised what makes it down the line. If you are in a low-lying area and have a sump pump, you can flush only toilet paper. Be prepared to see your pump fail if you flush cosmetic cotton pads, floss, cotton tips, condoms or feminine hygiene products. This is a good basic rule to follow no matter what kind of sewer system you have.
