There’s no question that appliances make our lives easier: They keep our food cold, they let us cook it or warm it up. They wash clothes. They dry them. And in a dishwasher’s case, they allow us to have elaborate meals without having to deal with the gritty work of scrubbing everything afterward.
Dishwasher Noisiness Levels
Let’s get an obvious reason out of the way: Dishwashers make noise. Some are louder than others. In fact, one of the main features buyers tend to ask for when doing research is whether there’s a quieter model than traditional machines.
And yes, there are. This is measured in decibels. The lower the decibel, the more expensive the dishwasher will be, since it’ll be quieter. (For a sample of what each decibel level sounds like, click here).
Dishwasher Making Noise When Water Circulates
Now, if your dishwasher is making unusual noises you know are being caused by something other than its usual cycle, it could be for several reasons. Finding out the problem’s root cause depends on the type of the sound.
1. Dishwasher Making a Grinding Noise
Your dishwasher could be making a grinding noise if an object is lodged at the bottom of the dishwasher.
Solution: The typical culprits include smaller items, such as cutlery or condiment containers that could fall through the rack slits. If you’ve already checked for this and haven’t been able to find anything, shut off the machine, remove the impeller and look for any debris that may be stuck around the chopper blade.
2. Dishwasher Making a Rattling Noise
Your dishwasher could be making a rattling noise if the dishes, utensils, or other kitchenware are not properly placed on the racks. It could also be a small piece of glass that may be stuck around the chopper blade or the drain pump.
Solution: If you’ve already checked for loose items and everything’s in its place, the rattling is could be caused by a worn out pump motor or a plumbing issue. For this type of situation, you’ll have to contact a plumber for assistance.

3. Dishwasher Making a Thumping Noise
If your dishwasher is making a thumping noise at regular intervals, the spray arm is probably hitting an item as it rotates. This tends to happen more often with larger pots.
Solution: Open the machine and rearrange the taller pots and pans.
4. Dishwasher Making a Metal Banging Noise
If the sound you hear sounds like someone’s using a drilling machine somewhere close by, the dishwasher pipes may be rattling due to a water hammer. This happens when water moves so rapidly through the pipes, it creates shock waves that cause plumbing to vibrate.
Solution: Install a water hammer shock arrestor on your pipes.

5. Dishwasher Making a Humming Noise
If your dishwasher makes a humming noise and the control panel goes blank, you’ll have to replace the fan. A dishwasher’s fan turns on during the drying cycle.
Now, while some dishwasher parts are so expensive, such as the motor, that you may be better off purchasing a new one, installing a new fan is a relatively easy fix.
Solution: You’ll need a Torx screwdriver, a slot screwdriver, work gloves, and a new vent and fan system to replace the old one. Note your dishwasher’s make and model before buying them.
Before getting started, shut off the circuit breaker that powers the dishwasher. To be even safer, unplug the machine from under your sink. Remove the screws from the door panel and separate the door’s cover from the inner door panel and unplug cords connecting both doors. Once you’re able to separate the outer door from the dishwasher, replace the vent and fan. For a video tutorial on how to do it, click here.
