LED vs. Regular (Incandescent) Light Bulbs

led vs regular light bulbs

It seems like every day, we are reminded of the many ways in which our actions negatively impact the planet. For one thing, tons and tons of waste ends up in landfills, and in our oceans.

Yet not everyone is lining up to jump on the “Save the Planet” bandwagon, because in some ways, it can be expensive. One example is a simple light bulb. These little items may seem insignificant, yet we all use them on a daily basis. And when one needs to be replaced, it’s tempting to grab the least costly option. After all, we have bills to pay.

But what if we took a deeper look into the difference between LED light bulbs vs. regular incandescent bulbs? Would there be a quantifiable benefit to opt for the more expensive version?

Considering that incandescent light bulbs are being phased out, you might as well get used to their greener, improved model.

5 Benefits of LED Light Bulbs Over Incandescent Light Bulbs

1. Energy Efficiency

Compared vis-à-vis, LED light bulbs are about 90% more efficient than standard incandescent light bulbs. This means that you’ll save money on your monthly electric bill.

2. Longer Lasting

Regular light bulbs last for about 1,000 hours. While that may sound like a lot, LED lights have a life expectancy between 30,000 and 50,000 hours, depending on the quality of the bulb you purchase. Therefore, even if you buy a brand on the lower end of the spectrum, you’ll still end up with a significantly better light bulb. Plus, in the long run, you’ll be saving money, because you won’t have to replace them as often.

3. They Don’t Burn Out

How many times have you had a light bulb burn out? It’s never a convenient time, because we turn on lights when it’s dark outside. Therefore, when a light burns out, you’re stuck in the dark, scrambling for a flashlight and a spare lightbulb. LED light bulbs won’t burn out. When they start losing power, their brightness gradually diminishes, giving you enough notice to replace it (while still keeping your room lit).

4. They Don’t Throw Off Heat

If you sit under an incandescent light bulb long enough, you’ll start to feel the temperature rise. This is due to the heat it emits. By comparison, LED bulbs manage heat in a more efficient way: The warmth emitted from this type of bulb is absorbed into a heat sink, so it doesn’t throw off heat.

5. Environmentally Friendly

Producing energy requires the burning of fossil fuels. Since LED requires less energy consumption, this translates to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
