How to Clean Your Toilet Naturally

How to Clean Your Toilet Naturally

Cleaning your toilet is an important aspect of good housekeeping and of course, proper hygiene in general. However, some of us are so afraid of bathroom germs that to get rid of them, we end up polluting our homes with harmful chemicals. Components of toilet bowl cleaners, such as hydrochloric acid and chlorine bleach, can irritate your eyes, nose, throat and respiratory tract. These may also aggravate symptoms for those with allergies or asthma and when exposed to the skin, they can cause severe burning and itching.

Want a clean, fresh smelling bathroom without exposing your family to all the harmful contaminants? We have a few natural solutions for you!

DIY Natural Toilet Cleaners

High-Power Natural Cleaner:

What you’ll need:

– ¾ cup borax

– 1 cup distilled white vinegar

– 10 drops lavender essential oil

– 5 drops lemon essential oil

How it works: White vinegar is a mild acid that works as natural cleaner for all sorts of things. When used in a toilet, it not only gets rid of nasty rings, but disinfects and deodorizes as well. Borax, or sodium tetraborate, is a multi purpose cleaner that removes stains, whitens and eliminates odors. (Note: Borax is not the same thing as boric acid, which is toxic.) The combination of lavender and lemon essential oils works as an antibacterial agent and makes this natural cleaner smell great!

Everyday Natural Cleaner:

What you’ll need:

– 1/2 cup of baking soda

– 1 cup of distilled white vinegar

– A few drops of your favorite essential oil (tea tree oil works great!)

How it works: This cleaner contains disinfectant, antibacterial and deodorizing properties, but is not quite as potent as the high-power mixture, making it better for everyday use. While baking soda does not possess the germ killing ability that borax does, it helps to fight yucky stains and odors. Since most essential oils contain antibacterial properties, a teaspoon or so of your favorite scent will help to keep your toilet germ-free.
