How Ductless Mini-Split Systems Work

“The ductless mini-split system is becoming more and more attractive today. Similar to our conventional split system that has components on the interior and exterior, the ductless mini-split system would have a condensing unit or heat pump on the outside connected by a line duct that would be connected to the inside.

One big advantage of going with this system over a conventional system is that it is very cost effective. The biggest place where this comes in command is renovation work. You don’t want to necessarily be able to have to go and put in all new ductwork or surfaces to install everything that’s required with a split system. Because it’s a ductless system, the air handler simply gets mounted in a place where it’s appropriate and is connected by this line set to the outside. That’s a big advantage. You can even use this in connection with existing split systems. It’s an easy add-on.

The fact that they’re cost-effective doesn’t mean they’re less efficient. The fact of the matter is that the most efficient SEER ratings for a conventional system are 18 SEER. They’re very quiet, they offer sleek operation and they’re very low profile. You can even operate them with a remote control.

Several different styles are available depending on the application for you. Wall-mounted units are very popular. However, in addition, there are ceiling-mounted units, and ceiling cassettes, which could be used in conjunction with a drop ceiling. There are concealed units, which are mounted above a ceiling itself and have a small duct that ties into outlets. There are also floor-mounted units.

Ductless mini systems can also be used in a variety of applications. Use it as a single-zone unit or in multi-zoned units. It should be noted that if you’re going to go with a multi zoned unit you will need to use it with a heat pump. They are remote control operated as we discussed before, but you can also install a wall-mounted thermostat to be able to control these. These units can be used in a multi-zone application as a mix and match. In other words, we can have a wall-mounted unit in one room, and in another room you can have a ceiling-mounted unit. Whatever makes the most sense for you particular environment.”
