It is always a good day to look for ways to be more eco-friendly around your home, but especially during Earth Month (April) and on Earth Day (April 22). From air conditioning to plumbing we have tons of tips to help your Tampa Bay home be more friendly to our environment, just keep reading.
Why Be Eco-Friendly?
Did you know that we are coming out of the hottest month ever recorded? It’s true. The global temperature in March of 2016 broke the centuries-old record. What does that mean for your Florida home? Two things: we should all look for ways to preserve our earth as well as strategies to stay cool.
Green Plumbing Tips
Water Heater Tips: According to the U.S. Department of Energy, turning your water heater down by just ten degrees could save your family almost $50 a year. Most water heaters are shipped with the temperature set at 140°F. For the average family, this temperature is much too high during the warmer months of the year.
Fix Plumbing Leaks: More than 3,000 gallons of water per year are wasted by a leaky faucet that drips if it follows the normal rate of one drip per second. That equals more than 180 showers! Also, in the average household, leaks can waste more than 10,000 gallons of water every year, or the amount of water needed to wash 270 loads of laundry. Common types of leaks found in the home include worn toilet flappers, dripping faucets, and other leaking valves. All are easily correctable.
Low-Flow Water Fixtures: For around $10 to $20 we can install water fixtures that reduce the flow of water and achieve water savings of 25%–60%.
Energy Efficient Washers, Dryers and Dishwashers: Water heating for these appliances accounts for most of the energy used during the cycles. Energy efficient appliances know to use the exact amount of hot water to complete the job, keeping energy costs low.
Environmentally Friendly Air Conditioning Tips
Thermostat Tips: Stay on top of the temperature on your thermostat. Be sure it is neither too high or too low in the summer as both can have effects on your energy usage. A programmable thermostat can help due to its customizable settings and ease at which you are able to change temperatures when you are not able to be eco-friendly at home.
Shade is a Natural Friend: Use our Earth’s natural cooling system, shade, to help you be more environmentally friendly while keeping your energy costs down. Black-out curtains and even simple blinds can reduce your air conditioner’s usage and keep your home cooler. Landscaping outside can also shade your home and air conditioning unit to also help keep things cool.
Clean and Maintained AC Systems are happy and eco-friendly systems. When your air conditioner isn’t regularly maintained the entire system must use more energy to perform its job functions of cooling and dehumidifying the air. Regular AC maintenance will ensure your system is eco-friendly and running at its most efficient state.
