If you have started to notice that the kitchen sink is taking a little longer to drain or maybe the water in your shower is starting to pool at your feet, you may be seeing the signs of a future drain clog. If you try to ignore the signs, you might just wake up one day with a full clog, so its best to take action right away.
You try everything: chemicals, the plunger, trying to remove the gunk yourself, but to no avail. What are you to do now? Here are three ways to deal with the unsightly blockage before calling the plumber for emergency backup.
1. Boiling Water
This method is one of the easiest ways to unclog any stubborn drain. First, boil as much water as possible. Next, slowly start pouring the boiling water down the clogged drain. Pour a portion of the water down the drain, then wait several seconds before adding more. Continue this three of four more time, or until the drain isn’t clogged. If this doesn’t work, you might need a stronger method.
2. Baking Soda and Vinegar
The most important part of this method is to use the mixture as soon as it possible. Baking soda and vinegar will start to fizz and could make a huge mess. Mix ⅓ a cup of baking soda with ⅓ a cup of vinegar and pour directly down the drain. The fizz will break up any gunk clogging up your drain. Let it sit for at least an hour, but longer if you can. Finally, wash the leftover baking soda down the drain with hot water.
3. Baking Soda, Vinegar, Gravity and Pressure
For a gunked up bath drain, make the same baking soda and vinegar mixture mentioned above. Pour it down your bathtub drain then place the stopper over the drain. Let the mixture sit for around one hour, then fill the bathtub up with water. Once filled, remove the stopper and watch as the pressure from the water magically dislodges whatever has been blocking your drain.
